How Do You Install a New Circuit Breaker?
panel scheduletorque specbreaker slot
Installing a new circuit breaker starts with reading the panel schedule to confirm the correct slot and verify the bus bar configuration before any work begins.
The main breaker is switched off, the panel cover removed, and the new breaker snapped into the designated breaker slot. The hot wire is torqued to the breaker's terminal at the manufacturer's specified torque spec — typically 35 in-lb for 15A and 20A breakers — while the neutral and ground wires land on their respective bars. Getting the torque spec right matters more than most homeowners realize: loose terminations are a leading cause of arcing. The circuit is then tested before the panel cover goes back on. This entire process, done correctly, usually takes 45 to 90 minutes for a single breaker swap.

What Circuit Breaker Do You Need?
amp ratingpanel brand match
The right breaker for your circuit breaker panel depends on three things: brand match, amp rating, and protection type.
Breakers are not interchangeable across manufacturers — the bus clips and contact design differ, and installing an unmatched breaker creates a fire risk and voids the panel's UL listing. Amp rating must correspond to the wire gauge on that circuit: 15A for 14-gauge, 20A for 12-gauge. Washington State's 2021 IECC also requires AFCI protection in most living-area circuits and GFCI protection in wet locations for new and renovated homes. If you're adding an EV charger — now requiring rough-in conduit under state code — the panel brand match and available capacity both factor into which breaker gets spec'd. A licensed electrician confirms all three before ordering parts.

Replacing Zinsco, Federal Pacific, and Sylvania Breakers

Zinsco replacement breakers and Federal Pacific replacement breakers are among the most-requested jobs we see in Yakima, and for good reason — a significant share of local homes built before 1980 still have these panels.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers are documented to fail to trip under overload, meaning the circuit keeps drawing current even when wiring is overheating. Zinsco circuit breakers replacement is urgent for a different reason: the aluminum bus bar corrodes against the breaker clip, welding them together so the breaker physically cannot trip. Sylvania breaker replacement carries similar concerns. Connecticut Electric manufactures drop-in-compatible units marketed as Connecticut Electric Zinsco breakers and Connecticut Electric Federal Pacific breakers, but most electricians in Yakima recommend full panel replacement over piecemeal Stab-Lok breaker replacement or Zinsco 40 amp breaker swaps. A Zinsco 15 amp breaker that can't trip is a fire hazard regardless of its age.

Replacing a Fuse in an Older Fuse Box
screw-in fusecartridge fuse
To replace a fuse in a fuse box, first identify whether the failed protective device is a screw-in fuse — the Edison-base type that threads into a socket like a light bulb — or a cartridge fuse, which pulls from a block holder and protects high-amperage circuits like dryer and range circuits. To replace a fuse in a breaker box that was later retrofitted with a fuse block, the same distinction applies. Screw-in fuses are replaced by hand after the main is off; cartridge fuses require a fuse puller. Yakima homes built in the 1950s and 1960s sometimes have original fuse panels still in service, and while a fuse swap is inexpensive, repeated blowing signals an overloaded circuit that needs a proper capacity assessment — not just a higher-amp fuse installed in its place.

New Circuit Breaker Installation Process
main breakerdedicated circuitlabeling
A full circuit breaker installation — whether you're replacing a breaker, adding a dedicated circuit, or handling a main breaker replacement — follows a defined sequence under Washington State electrical code.
The electrician pulls a permit through the City of Yakima Code Administration Division or Yakima County Building Department depending on your address, then de-energizes the panel. For main breaker replacement, Pacific Power may need to pull the meter first. Installing a new circuit means running wire to the load, landing it at a new breaker slot, and updating the panel's labeling so every circuit is accurately identified. Dedicated circuit installations for appliances like EV chargers or AC units require the breaker installation to match the load spec exactly. Final inspection confirms compliance before the permit closes.
